The time of day
The traditional time to
practice Ashtanga yoga in India
is very early in the morning (before Sam). Early rising is considered to be a
sign of discipline, spiritual fervor and devotion. There are practical
advantages of starting early: the mind is alert, there are few distractions and
in India
it is possible to avoid the intense heat of the sun.
Even if it’s not realistic
for you to practice before Sam, it’s a good idea to do yoga first thing in the
morning before you start your daily routine. Practicing Ashtanga yoga in the
evening is not recommended
because you are likely to be less alert and more tired, and your digestive
system is processing the food you have eaten during the day. In addition,
Ashtanga yoga can be very stimulating; if you practice in the evening, you may
notice that you feel wide awake for hours past your normal bedtime.
